From Charlene: How she is Feeling About her Home Ownership Journey

Earlier this year, Head Start Homes Founder, Stephen Woodlands, and Board Member, Brooke Flint, traveled to Port Macquarie to meet with Charlene, the local branch of the St. George Bank, Community Housing Limited and other organisations who are supporting our Mid-North Coast Pilot.

When we met Charlene, she was incredibly excited about the possibility of realising her home ownership dream via Head Start Homes new pathway. In this video, Charlene discusses how she felt at the beginning of her home ownership journey.

While Charlene’s response is similar to most first home buyers, her journey is truly remarkable, because without Head Start Homes, Charlene had no hope or pathway to pursue her dream of owning her own home:

“I would never have thought in my wildest dreams I would have the opportunity to buy my own home. It just wasn’t in my mind as a realistic opportunity. I was brought up in social housing and didn’t really know any different. That’s why this means so much for me."

“Owning a home would 100% make such a difference to our lives. Just to know my kids have a home. They can paint the walls, put photos up, there’s no restrictions. It would be truly home for them.”

Since Charlene realised that her home ownership dreams were possible, her heroic dedication to succeed has been inspiring. In fact, Charlene’s savings have increased by over 1000% since commencing our Head Start Savings Plan.

“Starting a savings plan was helpful. I’ve been determined. As soon as I was told about the opportunity – an opportunity of a lifetime for me – I’ve had such a determination. I can put things on hold while I do this. That’s been my mindset.”

We continue to be encouraged and inspired by the goodwill and commitment that so many organisations across multiple sectors have displayed while supporting our innovative home ownership program. Together, we’re empowering families to achieve their dreams of owning a home, while freeing up much-needed community housing for those in need. A huge thank you to all pilot partners, volunteers and donors for helping to create a pathway for lasting change.

A special thanks especially to Jody Broun, (Chief Executive) and the Aboriginal Housing Office, whose funds made this opportunity possible and Lucy, Rennay, Amanda, Leon and the rest of the Community Housing Limited team.

Stay tuned as we continue to share Charlene’s journey with you!
